Miyawaki Forests — A Kid’s Guide

Imagine a tiny jungle made by planting many different trees and bushes close together. The Miyawaki method, started by Dr. Akira Miyawaki, teaches us to build small forests that grow quickly and become healthy homes for birds, bugs and more.

Quick facts for kids:

Why are they special?

Helps nature

Provides food and shelter for birds, bees and butterflies.

Makes the air better

Trees clean the air and make places cooler on hot days.

Easy to start

Even a small group of kids and grown-ups can plant one.

How does the Miyawaki method work? (Simple steps)

1. Learn about native plants: Choose trees and bushes that naturally grow nearby.
2. Prepare the soil: Mix in compost to help baby plants grow strong.
3. Plant closely: Plant many different species close together so they help each other.
4. Protect and water: Water well at first and keep the area safe from trampling.

Kids’ FAQ

How long until the forest grows?

A Miyawaki forest becomes dense in 3–7 years, but you’ll see birds and insects visiting much sooner.

Can I plant one at school?

Yes! With permission you can turn any small area into a green spot.

Do trees need lots of water?

They need regular water at first. Once grown, they need less water because the soil holds moisture better.
