Today’s child is faced with a world filled with information and data and science is seen as a set of subjects filled with theories and equations. We, at Curiouscity, believe that science is not merely about textbooks and solving equations, but that it is also a creative field of study.

alt

We want to take the children beyond the world of books and the four walls of the classroom, and let them experience science first hand by working on simple experiments, and scientific concepts of experimentation and observation.  Following the great Physicist Richard Feynman who once said “I cannot understand what I cannot create”.

With this in mind, we have created several programs with the aim of enhancing the innate curiosity of science among children. We attempt to get the children to create their own little moments of scientific discovery and their own little moments of WOW.

We have several programs that we offer to schools in and around Bangalore.

1.   Water Works Science Fair

2.   Teacher Training Workshops

3.   Science Camps

WATER WORKS SCIENCE FAIR

Water Works

"Answers to the Treasure Hunt Questions"

"How to make a Steam Engine"

"Answers to Questions from Kids at Head Start Educational Academy"

"Answers to Questions from The Valley School"

We believe that a child needs to explore and discover the world around them and therefore we want to take them out of the four walls of the classrooms and let them experience Science first hand.  While one cannot get away from a syllabus which has also its own place in learning, what we can do is to supplement the learning by offering kids the possibility of exploration and experimentation on their own.

Valley School

With this in mind we have created a Science Event called Water Works Science Fair  in which we use materials that children can easily access at home so they can go back and experiment and try things out.  Topics covered range from properties of water (melting, boiling and freezing points), cohesion and capillary actionwater weight and water pressure, water conductivitynon-Newtonian fluidsBernoulli’s principle and the Coanda effect, the history of water use, water in interstellar spacetornadoes and whirlpoolsanimal distribution in the oceans and estuarieseffect of water pressure on animals, and much more.  This fair was modeled on Science Interactive Centres around the world with hands on activities at its heart. We at Curiouscity believe that science is not just a field of facts and theory, but it is one of creativity, that begins with a question. And there is no doubt that this fair will get the children to ask questions and spark their curiosity in subjects they will encounter now or later in their classrooms and beyond.

We have been conducting our Water Works Science Fair at Schools in and around Bangalore and it has been well received by several schools. We have recently conducted our day long Science fair at The Valley School and Head Start Educational Academy.  Bangalore International School, Lawrence School Bangalore, Inventure Academy Bangalore, Sujaya School Bangalore, Citizen English School Bangalore and Shishu Mandir Bangalore have also participated in this event.

No matter how well we sell an idea, your best gauge of this event would really be from the Feedback we have received from both the students and teachers alike.

TEACHER TRAINING WORKSHOPS

We at Curiouscity have been working with children over the past five years doing workshops where we teach kids about the basics behind science – methods of experimentation, observations, and analysing data.  We do this in a fun filled, challenging and team based environment, where we take topics of science and work with the children to explore concepts, ask questions and work out methods to answer them.

Teacher Training Workshop

While one cannot get away from syllabus based learning in today’s schools, which has also its own place in learning. However, what we can do is supplement the learning by offering kids the possibility of exploration and experimentation on their own.

The idea behind this teacher training workshop, is not to reinvent the wheel in terms of the syllabus, but how to pull out modules within a syllabus and change things around to make the children discover a concept rather than be taught the same – and to expose teachers to the value of such “discovery learning”.

We have many methods of doing this, from student teaching, to challenge setting, to negative challenges, creating analogies that work – all of which can be used to create an environment that encourages children to think, and ask questions.  A child asking a question is a child who is interested.  How we address these questions is how we keep the child interested.

This program is being designed and conducted by highly qualified scientists and educators with extensive research and teaching experience.

SCIENCE CAMPS

Given the vast number of topics in science today, we feel that children need to learn how to approach science. With this in mind, we have created many two hour workshops which cut across all fields of science, and aims to build a scientific temperament in the children.  We have been running these workshops for the past 5 years, both at children’s centres and at several schools in Bangalore.

We focus on children between the ages of 8 to 14, as we feel that these children are starting out with science, and have not yet learned enough "terminology" and "theories" to cloud their thinking. We have found that this age group is very responsive and receptive to new ideas and they often think outside the box.

alt

Our two hour workshops are designed to allow children to come up with ideas, solve problems, design experiments and teach them techniques used in science and how to apply them to different questions.

Each of these workshops has been written up in great detail that would allow a teacher to recreate the same within his or her classroom. If a class could be exposed to just 12 such workshops during the academic year, we find the children develop a different approach to science - one in which they drive the questions, and think of solutions, or ways to test these questions - irrespective of the subject being physics, chemistry, math or biology, environment, or any other field of science today.

The package of experiments will be available to your teachers, along with a short two day training program on how to deliver them.
