WEEKEND WORKSHOP-2013-2014

Science Workshops for children between the ages of 7 and 12

Our Goal

Let's not do science in a regular way

Let's explore science the way the old masters used to

Instead of learning what they discovered

Let's make those discoveries ourselves

How we go about it?

We will explore many topics from the physics of water to the way machines work, the chemistry of colours to the behaviour of ants etc.  We work with the children to explore the nature of science through observation, questioning and experimentation.  "Understanding how to do science" is what we focus on as an underlying theme in all our sessions and the children and we educators learn through a process of self discovery.

Who will conduct the sessions?

Dr. Shonali Chinniah and Rohit D'Cruz (an educator working with us for over a year) will be conducting these sessions.  Shonali has a Ph.D in Marine ecology and Rohit is a pilot.  All the programs have been developed by Dr. Sukanya (Physics) , Dr. Utpal (Physics) and Dr. Shonali and you can learn more about us at www.curiouscity.org.  We have been creating science modules for children since 2008.

Session dates and timings:

12 x two hour sessions on Saturday Mornings from 10am to 12pm (alternate weekends for the most part)

June 29th, July 13th, July 27th, Aug 17th, Aug 31st, Sept 21st, Sept 28th, Oct 12th, Nov 9th, Nov 23rd, Dec 7th and Dec 14th

We currently have two programs:

Water Works Science Fair

The Water Works Science Fair has been created and designed by Dr. Sukanya Sinha, Dr. Utpal Chattopadhayay and Dr. Shonali Chinniah, with Ph.d's in Physics and Biology with the aim of getting children to ask questions and spark curiosity about science in them.  We use materials that children can easily access at home so they can go back and experiment and try out things.

WW

Topics covered range from properties of water (melting, boiling and freezing points), cohesion and capillary action, water weight and water pressure, water conductivity, non-Newtonian fluids, Bernoulli’s principle and the coanda effect, the history of water use, water in interstellar space, tornados and whirlpools, animal distribution in the oceans and estuaries, effect of water pressure on animals, and much more.  This fair was modelled on Science Interactive Centres around the world with hands on activities at its heart.

Science Camps at Hippocampus

Science Camps at Hippocampus are fun and a hands on learning experience for our budding scientists. We introduce concepts in Science in Interesting and Innovative ways. The emphasis is on learning concepts and not memorizing facts. The child learns by doing real experiments in a relaxed, fun atmosphere.

We believe that a child needs to explore and discover the world around them and therefore we want to take them out of the four walls of the classrooms and let them experience Science first hand.  While one cannot get away from a syllabus which has also its own place in learning, what we can do is to supplement the learning by offering kids the possibility of exploration and experimentation on their own.

Curiouscity

With this in mind we have created a Science Event called Water Works Science Fair that is based on the model of Science Exploratiums in other countries.  We have created a series of experiments, exhibits, demos and audio-visuals that encourage children to ask questions and discover how things around them happen.  Each year we will be creating a new Interactive Science Fair on a different theme, so kids can explore all kinds of different ideas about science.

We have been conducting our Water Works Science Fair in Schools around Bangalore and it has been well received by several schools. We have recently conducted our day long Science fair at The Valley School and Head Start Educational Academy.  Bangalore International School, Lawrence School Bangalore, Inventure Academy Bangalore, Sujaya School Bangalore, Citizen English School Bangalore and Shishu Mandir Bangalore have also participated in this event.

No matter how well we sell an idea, your best gauge of this event would really be from the Feedback we have received from both the students and teachers alike.

The activities are designed to be simple where the children have to come up with ideas, solutions and questions. In this way, they develop a deep interest and a fascination for science and math, and a strong foundation of concepts in science.

So hurry, enroll your child today, as there are limited seats for this year’s level 1 program which is on at:

Hippocampus Children’s library, Koramangala, Bangalore

In 2012: October 6th November 3rd November 17th       December 8th

In 2013: January 5th January 19th February 2nd
